Visit through March 8, 2026.
Traditional silverwork from Shanxi Province (northern China, east of the Yellow River) is a fundamental part of Chinese metalworking art, rich in history and deeply rooted in popular folklore. Shanxi silverwork represents an exceptional expression of Chinese artisanal tradition, flourishing particularly from the Ming (1368–1644) and Qing (1644–1912) dynasties through the period of the Republic of China (1912–1949). Its refined techniques and aesthetic value directly reflect the customs and cultural identity of the people of Shanxi.
The exhibition is divided into six interconnected sections that combine both material and intangible aspects, offering visitors a visual and cultural experience of traditional Shanxi silverwork. The first section, organized chronologically, presents the general characteristics of this tradition. Sections two through five explore adornments for the hair, ears, neck, and hands, reflecting both aesthetic ideals and local customs. The sixth section is dedicated to manufacturing and decorative techniques.
Silver ornaments from Shanxi embody the folkloric, artisanal, cultural, artistic, and historical values of the region’s people..
