Cowboys of the Cross of the Devil
Through October
Free with Museum admission
Photographer Werner Segarra offers an intimate exploration of the cowboys of Sonora’s Sierra Alta. Divided into three thematic axes—landscape, work, and portrait—the exhibition presents the raw power of the region’s terrain and the enduring spirit of those who inhabit it. Expansive skies, rugged mountains, and remote communities form the backdrop to a way of life shaped by resilience and tradition.
For more than thirty years, Segarra has immersed himself in this territory, documenting the daily realities of the vaquero with a lens he describes as “architectural portraiture.” His photographs celebrate the ingenuity, strength, and family bonds that define these communities, while also revealing the role of faith and festivity in sustaining them.
Each image becomes both a tribute and a testimony: to work carried out against the odds, to the cultural identity that binds generations, and to a living heritage often overlooked. This exhibition invites visitors to reflect on the connection between humans, their labor, and the landscapes they call home.
